What does the Jammu to Srinagar drive look like?

The highway leaves the Jammu plains, climbs through the lower Himalaya, crosses the Pir Panjal range at Banihal and drops into the Kashmir Valley. Our route page calls it a 270 km journey on NH 44, and the stages below show where the day goes.

StageWhat you passWhat to expect
Jammu to UdhampurPlains giving way to foothillsBusy traffic leaving Jammu; an easy first stop for tea
Udhampur to RambanThe Chenani-Nashri tunnel, about 9 km long, then BatoteThe tunnel shortens the climb; Patnitop is a short detour for a hill-station break
Ramban to BanihalA gorge road beside the Chenab riverThe slowest stretch after rain or snow, because of landslides and narrow sections
Banihal to AnantnagThe old Jawahar tunnel and the newer Banihal-Qazigund tunnel, then QazigundThe first view of the Valley, with flat orchard country ahead
Anantnag to SrinagarAwantipora and Pampore, the saffron townTraffic builds as you reach the Srinagar outskirts

How is the fare worked out?

We have not printed a rate card for this route on this page, because the fare changes with the date, the vehicle and the basis of the trip. Operators define one-way, return and halt-included trips differently, so compare what a quote covers, not only the number.

What changes the fareHow it works
VehicleA sedan costs less than an SUV or MUV, and a Tempo Traveller costs more, because of size and fuel
One way or returnA one-way drop is priced for the driver's trip back as well, so ask whether a return to Jammu is cheaper per kilometre
Date and seasonPeak tourist weeks, festival days and winter conditions can move the fare
Halts and detoursA night at Patnitop or a Katra stop adds time, and sometimes a driver's night halt
Pick-up and dropA Jammu airport or Katra pick-up and a drop at a houseboat landing are quoted as stated

What is included, and what can cost extra?

Our taxi tours list a dedicated vehicle with a driver, fuel, toll tax and the driver's allowance as included. For a Jammu to Srinagar transfer, ask the quote to state the same four items, then ask about the points operators often bill separately:

  • Parking at stops and at your Srinagar hotel.
  • Any state or union territory entry tax that applies to your vehicle.
  • Waiting time, for example during a Katra or Vaishno Devi visit.
  • A driver's night halt, if you split the journey.

Which vehicle should you choose?

VehicleSuitsNote
Sedan, such as the Swift DzireTwo or three travellers with modest luggageThe boot fills quickly with two large suitcases
SUV or MUV, such as the Innova or Innova CrystaFamilies and groups of up to six or seven with bagsMore room and comfort on a long hill road
Tempo Traveller: 8-seater, 14-seater or 17-seaterLarger families and groupsOur Srinagar to Jammu Tempo Traveller page covers the return direction

Tell us the number of travellers and the bags, and we suggest the vehicle.

Where can we pick you up?

  • Jammu airport: our page says our driver meets you there.
  • Jammu railway station or the bus stand, if you arrive by train or bus.
  • Your Jammu hotel, or Katra if you are coming from Vaishno Devi: see our Katra to Srinagar taxi page.
  • At the other end, we drop you at your Srinagar hotel, at a houseboat landing, or at Srinagar airport.

If your train or flight reaches Jammu late at night, a night in Jammu and a start at first light is usually kinder than driving through the hills in the dark.

What should you know about the road and the season?

  • Winter: snow near Banihal and Ramban can slow or close the highway, and the road can be shut for hours after heavy snowfall.
  • Monsoon, July and August: heavy rain can cause landslides and slow the gorge section near Ramban.
  • Traffic: the authorities sometimes regulate the highway, with one-way flows or convoys, and issue daily advisories.
  • Our advice: we confirm the road situation for your dates before you pay, and you should ask again the day before you travel. Nobody can promise an open road.

Read our Is Kashmir safe to visit page before any Kashmir trip, and our how to reach Kashmir guide if you are comparing the road with the train or a flight.

What can you see on the way?

  • The Chenani-Nashri tunnel, one of the longest road tunnels in India, which makes the climb quicker.
  • Patnitop, a pine-covered hill station that makes a cool lunch or tea halt.
  • Kud, known for its patisa sweet, and the roadside eateries our page mentions, where drivers stop for local food.
  • Pampore's saffron fields, which flower in autumn, usually from late October into November.
  • Katra and Vaishno Devi, if you want a pilgrimage first: see our Kashmir Vaishno Devi tour package and the Vaishno Devi guide.
