For years the only way from Katra to Kashmir was a long day on the highway. Now there is a train, and many pilgrims who have just finished the Vaishno Devi yatra ask whether it is the better way to reach Srinagar. This guide is from the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar. It explains what the Vande Bharat journey is like, how to find the timetable and fare yourself, what to plan around at both stations, and when a taxi is the easier choice. We do not print a timetable or a fare here, because both change and the live source is IRCTC.
Is there a train from Katra to Srinagar?
Yes. The Vande Bharat links Katra with Srinagar in about three hours, which our Kashmir tour package from Katra guide sets against a full day by road. Katra is a stop on the line, so you board close to the town where the yatra starts. The train runs on set days at set times, and both can change, so the right habit is to read the schedule for the exact date you plan to travel rather than trust a number you saw last season.
What is the journey like?
Smooth and quick compared with the road. The line leaves the Jammu hills, crosses river gorges on high bridges, runs through long tunnels in the mountain ranges, and then emerges into the Kashmir Valley, where the landscape opens into orchards and flat farmland. There are no hairpin bends, which matters if the highway makes you queasy. Our Katra to Srinagar taxi page notes the same.
- Keep a light jacket in your hand luggage, because the air is cooler on arrival than in Katra for most of the year.
- Carry water and a snack, and check what the fare class includes on the ticket page.
- Charge your phone before you board and keep the ticket and photo ID where you can reach them.
- Do not expect a view from every seat; many stretches are in tunnels or cuttings.
How do you check the timetable and fare?
Read it from the booking source, for your own date, and read it again close to travel. These steps work for any season.
- Open the IRCTC site or app and search from Katra to Srinagar for your date.
- Look at the running days and the departure and arrival times for that exact date, not for the week.
- Compare the classes shown. Each class has its own fare and seat type, and the screen shows the current price.
- Check availability and the booking window for your date. Seats in school holidays, Navratri and festival weeks go early.
- Book in the names on the photo IDs the travellers will carry, and save the ticket.
- Look again the day before you travel for changes to the service.
What can change, and what should you plan around?
| What can change | Why it matters | What we suggest |
|---|---|---|
| Running days | A train that does not run on your day removes the option entirely | Check the date before you book anything else, such as rooms or a pickup |
| Departure and arrival times | They decide your hotel check-in, your first meal and your first sightseeing stop in Srinagar | Plan the first afternoon in Srinagar only after the ticket is confirmed |
| Fare and class | The fare is set by class and changes with the date | Read it on IRCTC; we do not print a figure |
| Seats | Busy weeks fill early | Book as soon as your date opens, and have a taxi as the fallback |
| Weather and track conditions | Fog, heavy rain or work can delay or cancel a train | Keep a spare day and do not book a flight on the day you arrive |
How do you fit the train with the Vaishno Devi yatra?
Treat the yatra as the part of the trip that decides the timing, and the train as the part that follows. Queues, weather and your own pace decide when you come down from the shrine, so we never plan the train for that same day. Our Vaishno Devi and Kashmir package guide sets out the full sequence, and our Vaishno Devi destination page explains the shrine itself.
- Spend the yatra day and the night after it in Katra. Our Katra rooms page covers the stays.
- Keep one buffer day after the yatra for rest, laundry and slack.
- Take the train to Srinagar on the buffer day or the morning after, with the ticket booked only once the yatra date is firm.
- If you prefer to skip the climb, read how the helicopter option works in our Vaishno Devi helicopter guide. The shrine's own channels handle that booking, not us.
What happens when you reach Srinagar station?
The train ends at Srinagar railway station, which our Katra guides place on the edge of the city at Nowgam, a few kilometres from the centre. That is a ride across town before you reach Dal Lake, the Boulevard or most hotels, so build in a comfortable gap rather than a tight connection. Our Kashmir packages start with a Srinagar airport pickup. For a train arrival, send us the train and the day, and we quote a pickup from the station instead.
| You arrive | A sensible plan | Link to a package that fits |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Check in, rest briefly, then start with the Mughal gardens and a shikara ride on Dal Lake | The 3N/4D Quick Getaway opens this way |
| Afternoon | Check in, take a short shikara ride and keep the evening light | The 4N/5D Kashmir Classic keeps the first day gentle |
| Evening | Go straight to the stay, have dinner and sleep; start sightseeing the next morning | Ask us to shift the first sightseeing day by one |
If you sleep on a houseboat, tell us the train and the ghat number, because a houseboat is reached by a short shikara from the shore, and your bags come with you. Our Dal Lake guide explains how a houseboat arrival works.
Train or taxi: which should you choose?
| If you are | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One or two travellers with light bags | The train | Faster, calmer and no hairpin bends |
| A family of four to six with luggage | A taxi | Door to door, easy with bags, and priced per vehicle; see the taxi page |
| A larger group | A tempo traveller | One vehicle for everyone; see our Kashmir taxi service |
| An older traveller with a long yatra behind you | Either, depending on the legs | The train is gentler on the body, a taxi saves two station transfers |
| Someone who could not get a seat | A taxi | A full day, so leave in the morning |
You can also mix them: train up, taxi down, or the reverse. If you are coming from Jammu rather than Katra, our Kashmir tour package from Jammu guide and Jammu to Srinagar taxi page cover the same choice.
Which Kashmir package follows the train?
Package prices are per person on twin sharing, ex-Srinagar, for two travellers, from each package's own table. The train fare and the Katra rooms are extra.
| Package | Nights | Per person, two travellers |
|---|---|---|
| 3N/4D Quick Getaway | 3 | ₹11,950 |
| 4N/5D Kashmir Classic | 4 | ₹13,800 |
| 5N/6D Explorer | 5 | ₹15,900 |
What should you pack for both ends of the trip?
Katra and Srinagar are opposites in weather. In summer Katra is hot and Srinagar is pleasant. In winter Katra is mild and Srinagar is cold, with snow possible in Gulmarg and Sonmarg. Pack for both, or leave warm clothes in Katra and collect them if your plan returns there. Our packing list covers every season.
Which mistakes do travellers make with this journey?
- Booking the train for the day they come down from the shrine, and then losing the ticket when the queue runs long.
- Assuming the station is near Dal Lake, then arriving without a pickup.
- Taking a heavy suitcase set on a train when a vehicle would carry it more easily.
- Not checking the running day before booking rooms.
- Forgetting that nobody can promise a train or a road on a given day, and having no spare day.
What is the next step?
Send your train details or your travel date, the number of travellers, your luggage and the Kashmir package you prefer through our contact page. Our site says a Srinagar planner replies within 30 minutes. We quote the station pickup as its own line and confirm what is included before you pay. For the full list of ways in, see our guide to how to reach Kashmir, and read our safety guide for the current advisories before you travel.
Questions travellers ask
How long does the Katra to Srinagar Vande Bharat take?
About three hours, according to our Katra guides, compared with a full day on the highway. The exact departure and arrival times depend on the date, so check the schedule on IRCTC for your travel day.
How much is the Katra to Srinagar Vande Bharat fare?
The fare depends on the class and the date, and it changes, so we do not print one. Read it on IRCTC when you search for your date. Compare it with a taxi, which is priced per vehicle and can suit four or more travellers with luggage.
Does the Vande Bharat run every day from Katra to Srinagar?
The train runs on set days at set times, and the pattern can change. Do not assume it runs on your day. Check the date on IRCTC before you book rooms or a pickup, and keep a taxi as a fallback if you cannot get a seat.
Where does the train stop in Srinagar?
At Srinagar railway station, on the edge of the city at Nowgam, a few kilometres from the centre. You still need a vehicle to reach Dal Lake, a hotel or the airport. Tell us the train and the day, and we quote a pickup from the station.
Can TDI book the train ticket for me?
No. Train tickets are booked on IRCTC, and you choose the class and the date there. What we arrange is the Kashmir part: the station pickup, the stays and the package. Send us your confirmed train and we plan the first day around its arrival time.
Is the Vande Bharat easier than a taxi for older travellers?
Often yes, because it is smooth and has no hill bends, and the journey is short. The trade-off is two station transfers and carrying your own bags. A taxi goes door to door and carries luggage easily but takes a full day. Tell us the ages and the luggage, and we advise.
Should I take the train on the day I finish the Vaishno Devi yatra?
We advise against it. Queues, weather and your own pace decide when you come down, and a train booked for the same day can be lost. Keep a buffer day, book the train once the yatra date is firm, and tell us early if the plan slips so we can move the pickup.
