May is when Kashmir settles into summer. The tulips are over, but the valley is green, the orchards are setting fruit, the river is full of snowmelt and the days are warm enough to sit outside. It is also the month when Indian school holidays begin, and the quiet of April gives way to a busier valley. This guide, from the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar, describes a usual May, not a forecast. It covers the weather, what is in bloom, which roads and places are open, how crowded it gets and how to plan and pack. We confirm dates and conditions for your week before you pay.
What is Kashmir like in May?
Mostly pleasant. Mornings are bright, afternoons warm, and nights cool, with showers from time to time and the odd afternoon storm. The winter snow has retreated to the high slopes, the streams run strong and the grass on the meadows turns a deep green. For many travellers, this is the Kashmir of the postcards: sunlight on water, flowers at the roadside and mountains still carrying white caps.
How warm is Kashmir in May?
| Place | What to expect | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Srinagar | Roughly 10 to 24 °C; warm in the sun, cool at night | Light clothes by day, a jacket after dark |
| Pahalgam | Fresh and cooler than Srinagar; river valley air | Mornings and evenings are cold; rain is possible |
| Gulmarg | Cool, with a thawing meadow and snow patches on the higher ground | Wind and cloud can change the view in minutes |
| Sonmarg | Cold in the shade and near the glacier | Snow around Thajiwas; carry warm layers |
| Doodhpathri and Yusmarg | Fresh, green and breezy | Muddy tracks after rain; wear shoes with grip |
These are rough ranges. A warm spell can feel like June, and a cold front can bring rain and a sharp drop. Dress in layers you can add and remove.
What is at its best in May?
- The meadows at Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Doodhpathri, green and starting to flower, with fewer people on the paths than in peak summer.
- The Mughal gardens, which are lush and leafy; see our Mughal gardens guide.
- Orchards setting fruit after the blossom of April and early May.
- The Lidder at Pahalgam, high and fast with snowmelt. Our river rafting page says May and June are exciting but powerful, and that operators judge the river day by day.
- Long, clear light on Dal Lake, good for a shikara ride at the start or end of the day.
The tulip garden is not a May sight. Our tulip garden ticket page describes the garden as open from mid-March to late April, so for tulips, read our April guide and plan an earlier trip.
Which places and roads are open in May?
| Place or road | Usual May position | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Srinagar, Dal Lake, the gardens | Open and lively | Plan outdoor sights in the morning and keep the afternoon flexible |
| Gulmarg and the gondola | Usually running, with weather and maintenance days deciding | Check the operator's notices for the date; see our gondola ticket page |
| Pahalgam, Betaab, Aru | Open; the roads and meadows are green | Rain can muddy the tracks; ponies are paid directly |
| Sonmarg and the glacier | Usually open, with snow around the glacier | Check the road on the morning of the drive |
| Doodhpathri | Open and green | A good quieter day out; see our Doodhpathri taxi page |
| Gurez | The Razdan Pass road reopens on dates the authorities set | Our Gurez taxi page says it usually reopens in late April or early May; we confirm the position and the entry rules for your dates |
| Srinagar-Leh road | Reopens on dates set by the road authorities | Ask us before you fix a Ladakh leg; see our Leh road trip guide |
How busy is May, and how early should you book?
Busier than April and than the quiet seasons. School holidays begin for many families, so flights, houseboats and the better rooms at Gulmarg and Pahalgam fill first, especially for weekends and for the Dal Lake side of Srinagar. The gondola can have queues at peak hours. Prices tend to rise with demand.
- Book flights and the main hotel nights as early as you can.
- Put the busiest sights on weekday mornings if your dates are flexible.
- Keep one spare day in the plan for weather and for a slow morning.
- Ask which nights are on a hotel and which on a houseboat, and what each includes.
- Confirm the rate and the terms for your dates before you pay.
Will it rain?
At some point, probably. Showers are common, and they are good for the greenery and less good for photographs and pony tracks. Afternoon storms can move in over the hills. Plan one flexible day: a garden morning, a handicrafts shopping stop, a long lunch or a slow afternoon on the water. Our Srinagar sightseeing tour page shows how we plan a city day.
What should you pack for May?
- Light cotton for the day and a fleece or light jacket for evenings and for Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg.
- A waterproof jacket or compact umbrella.
- Sunglasses, sun cream and a hat; the sun is strong at height.
- Walking shoes with grip for wet meadows and muddy tracks.
- A power bank and a copy of your photo ID. Our packing list covers the rest.

For a longer trip, our 6N/7D Summer Special is built for the warm months. Its listing says it is valid from July to September 2026, so ask us for the rate and availability on your May dates. The tables do not split seasons, so we confirm the price and terms for your week before you pay. Our older summer guide covers the summer months in general.
How does May compare with April and the summer months?
May is warmer and greener than April and quieter than June and July. April has the tulips and the blossom; May has the open meadows and the easier weather; the middle of summer has the longest days and the fullest roads. Our month-by-month guide puts the months side by side, and our March guide covers the earlier spring.

Questions travellers ask
Is May a good month to visit Kashmir?
Yes, for many travellers. Days are warm, the meadows are green and the snow has retreated to the high slopes. It is also the first busy month of summer, so book early. The tulips finish in April, so May is for meadows, gardens and valley drives rather than flowers on show.
Will there be snow in Kashmir in May?
Snow lingers on the upper slopes and around the Sonmarg glacier, and Gulmarg's higher ground can still hold patches. The towns themselves are snow-free. Carry warm layers, because cold air comes down from the snow, and check the road conditions on the morning you drive to the higher places.
Are the tulips in bloom in May?
Usually not. Our tulip page describes the garden as open from mid-March to late April, with the exact weeks following the winter. If tulips are the reason for your trip, plan for April and read our tulip festival guide for the timing.
Is the Gulmarg gondola running in May?
Usually, but weather, maintenance days and technical stops decide. The operator publishes the notices, fares and closure days, and our gondola page explains where to find them. Book the ticket for a weekday morning if you can, and keep a spare day for wind and cloud.
Is May crowded in Kashmir?
It is busier than April and the quiet months, because school holidays start for many families. Houseboats, the better hotels and flights fill first, and weekends are the tightest. Booking early, using weekday mornings for popular sights and keeping a spare day all help.
Are Sonmarg and Gurez open in May?
Sonmarg is usually open, with snow around the glacier. Gurez depends on the Razdan Pass road, which reopens on dates the authorities set; our Gurez page says it usually opens in late April or early May. We confirm both roads and the entry rules for your dates before you pay.
What should I wear in Kashmir in May?
Light clothes for the day and a fleece or jacket for evenings, with a waterproof layer, sun protection and shoes with grip. Srinagar can feel warm at noon and cold after dark, and Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg are cooler. Layers are better than one heavy coat.
