April is when Kashmir shows off. The tulip garden fills with colour, the orchards flower, the air softens and the valley starts to feel like the postcards. It is also when the crowds return. This guide, from the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar, covers the weather, the tulips, the blossom, the rain, the roads and how to plan and pack. It describes a usual April, not a forecast, and we confirm dates and conditions for your week before you pay.
What is Kashmir like in April?
Mild by day, cool by night and frequently showery. The snow that covered the valley in winter has retreated to the high slopes, the streams are full, the fields are greening and the first leaves are on the chinar trees. Mornings can be bright and afternoons grey, and the weather changes quickly. Spring is one of the wetter times in the valley, so plan on a shower or two.
How warm is Kashmir in April?
| Place | What to expect | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Srinagar | Roughly 14 to 22 °C by day; about 3 to 9 °C at night | Warm in the sun, cold after dark |
| Pahalgam | Cool and fresh; mornings and evenings cold | Snow melting on the meadows; rain is common |
| Gulmarg | Cold, with snow on the upper slopes and a muddy, thawing meadow below | Wind and cloud can change the view quickly |
| Sonmarg | Cold, with snow around the glacier valley | Check the road on the morning |
Treat these as rough ranges. A warm spell can feel like early summer, and a cold front can bring sleet. Dress in layers you can add and remove.
When do the tulips peak in April?
The tulip garden above Dal Lake is the headline of the month. Our tulip garden ticket page says the garden is open from mid-March to late April, with exact dates following the bloom. In most years the main weeks of colour fall in April, but the week moves with the winter: a cold, late spring pushes it back, and a warm one brings it forward. The Floriculture Department announces dates and ticket arrangements each year, so we do not print them on this page.
Read our tulip festival guide for dates, tickets and timing, and our tulip festival tour package page for how we build a trip around it. If you are choosing between months, our March guide explains why the opening weeks have a thinner show.
What else blooms in April?
- Almond blossom, which is finishing in the first part of the month after its late-March start.
- Orchard blossom: apricot, cherry, peach, pear and apple trees flower through April and into May, with the timing shifting each year.
- The Mughal gardens, which green up and fill with spring flowers; see our Mughal gardens guide.
- The chinar trees, which unfurl their first leaves.
- Other spring flowers in the tulip garden, including hyacinths, daffodils and ranunculus, which our tulip page also lists.
Will it rain in April?
Probably, at least once. Showers are normal, and they are good for the flowers and less good for photographs and ponies. Plan one indoor-friendly day: the old city and its markets, a handicrafts shopping morning, a long lunch of Kashmiri food or a slow houseboat afternoon. Our Srinagar sightseeing tour page shows how we rearrange a city day around the rain.
Which places and roads are open in April?
| Place or road | Usual April position | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Srinagar, Dal Lake and the gardens | Open and at their liveliest | Book stays early; place the tulip garden on a morning |
| Gulmarg | Open; snow on the upper slopes, mud lower down; the gondola runs when weather allows | Keep it on a flexible day and check the position |
| Pahalgam | Open and fresh; some higher meadows still holding snow | Plan the town, the river and ponies as the weather allows |
| Sonmarg | Open, with snow around the valley; fresh snow can restrict the road | Decide on the morning |
| Yusmarg and Doodhpathri | Opening up as the snow melts; access can vary | Ask us before you plan them |
| Gurez and the Mughal Road | Normally still shut or restricted; they reopen later in spring | Plan them for late spring or summer |
| Srinagar-Leh road | The Zojila pass reopens on a date the authorities set | Do not plan a Ladakh drive until it is announced |
How busy is April, and when should you book?
April is one of the busiest months of the year around Srinagar, because the tulips and the mild weather bring visitors from all over India. Rooms near Dal Lake, houseboats and cars fill early, and the garden gets crowded at weekends and holidays. Book your stays as soon as you have dates, avoid weekends at the garden if you can and keep your flights changeable until the garden's dates are announced. Our packages offer both a hotel and a houseboat night in Srinagar.
April or May: how do they differ?
| April | May | |
|---|---|---|
| Weather | Mild with frequent showers | Warmer and greener, still showery |
| Flowers | Tulips and orchard blossom | Tulips over; meadows and wildflowers coming |
| Snow | Upper slopes only | Mostly high passes |
| Roads | Some reopening | More roads open, including some high routes |
| Crowds | Busy around the tulips | Busy as the holidays begin |
Choose April for tulips and blossom, and May if you want warmer weather and more of the high roads. See our month-by-month guide for the full year.
What does a five-day April plan look like?
- Day 1: Srinagar. Airport pickup, a houseboat or hotel, and an evening shikara ride. Dress warmly for the water.
- Day 2: Tulips and gardens. The tulip garden on a morning, then a Mughal garden. Keep the afternoon loose in case of rain.
- Day 3: Gulmarg or Pahalgam. We choose the day by the road and the weather, and check the gondola and the meadows.
- Day 4: Sonmarg, or the old city on a rainy day. A flexible day, decided on the morning.
- Day 5: Departure. Leave plenty of time for the airport, since April traffic and weather can slow the road.
Which TDI package suits April?
We use our standard valley packages and place the tulip garden on a good morning. Prices are per person, twin sharing, ex-Srinagar, from each package's own table. The tables do not split seasons, and garden tickets are not included, so we confirm the rate and add the ticket as a separate line for your dates.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4N/5D Kashmir Classic | 4 | ₹13,800 | ₹10,650 | ₹9,490 |

Questions travellers ask
Is April a good month to visit Kashmir?
Yes, for tulips, blossom and mild weather, and it is also the busiest spring month. Expect showers, book stays early and keep a spare day. If you prefer quiet and snow to flowers, March suits better; for warm weather and more open roads, look at May.
Are the tulips in bloom in April?
Usually the main weeks fall in April, but the exact week follows the winter. Our tulip page says the garden is open from mid-March to late April, and the Floriculture Department announces dates each year. We confirm the position for your week before you pay.
Will it rain in Kashmir in April?
Showers are common, because spring is one of the wetter times in the valley. Rain is good for the flowers and less good for photographs. Pack a rain jacket, wear shoes with grip and plan one indoor-friendly day, such as the old city or a shopping morning.
Is there still snow in Gulmarg in April?
On the upper slopes, yes, though the meadow below is thawing and muddy. The gondola runs when weather and snow allow, and timings change. We keep Gulmarg on a flexible day and check the position before you travel.
Is Kashmir crowded in April?
It is busy around Dal Lake and the tulip garden, especially at weekends and holidays. Rooms, houseboats and cars fill early, so book as soon as you have dates, and avoid weekends at the garden if you can.
Is Ladakh or Gurez open in April?
Usually not yet. The Srinagar-Leh road reopens at Zojila on a date the authorities set, and Gurez and the Mughal Road reopen later in spring. Look at late spring or summer for those routes, and ask us what is open for your dates.
