Most visitors to Srinagar picture a houseboat on Dal Lake, and many are surprised to hear there is a second lake with houseboats of its own. This comparison is from the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar. It sets the two lakes side by side on the things that decide a houseboat stay: setting, noise, access, evenings and the kind of traveller each suits. Where something depends on the individual boat or on your dates, we say so and we ask the owner before we quote.
What is the difference between Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake?
| Dal Lake | Nigeen Lake | |
|---|---|---|
| Size and setting | A large lake under the Zabarwan hills, with Boulevard Road along the shore | A smaller lake ringed by willows and poplars, joined to Dal by a narrow channel |
| Boats and activity | Many shikaras, floating gardens and visiting vendors | Fewer boats and fewer vendors on the water |
| Mood | Lively and social | Calmer, with more of a village feel |
| Getting around | Close to the Boulevard, cafes and the main sights | A short drive from the lakefront; allow extra time for transfers |
| Evenings | More to see and eat within reach | Peaceful, though some travellers find it secluded |
| Photography | Sunrise over the hills and busy shikara scenes | Still water, mist and reflections with few boats in the frame |
| Who it suits | First-timers and short stays | Travellers who want calm and have time |
Neither lake is better in itself. The same lake can offer a very different stay on different boats, which is why we look at the boat, the ghat and the access, not only the label. Our Dal Lake guide and Nigeen Lake houseboats page describe each in more detail.
Who should choose Dal Lake?
- First-time visitors who want shikara rides, floating gardens and the Boulevard's cafes within easy reach.
- Short stays, where every transfer costs a share of your time. Our 4-day itinerary and 3-day itinerary both use a houseboat on Dal.
- Groups who like an evening walk along the lakefront or a meal ashore.
- Travellers who want to be close to the Mughal gardens and the old city. See our Srinagar sightseeing tour.
Who should choose Nigeen Lake?
- Couples who want a quiet lakeside stay and a slower pace. See our honeymoon packages.
- Older travellers who prefer calmer mornings and fewer vendors calling from boats.
- Photographers and early risers who want mist on still water.
- Return visitors who have done Dal's waterfront and want a different view of the city.
- Travellers with a driver or a rental car, so that the distance from the Boulevard is not an issue.
Is a Nigeen houseboat always quieter?
Quieter on the water, usually, but not silent. A boat near a road or a busy ghat can be livelier than its lake suggests, and a boat on a quiet corner of Dal can be calmer than you expect. That is why we ask for the boat's name, its ghat and how you reach it, in writing, instead of promising a mood from the lake alone.
How does access differ between the two lakes?
Some houseboats have road access to the door, and others are reached by a short shikara ride from a ghat. Your bags travel with you either way. On Dal the ghats are close to the main road and the Boulevard. On Nigeen the lake is a drive away from the busiest waterfront, so build in extra time for arrival and for any evening outing. If you arrive late at night or in cold weather, ask whether the boat is reachable by road, because a shikara in the dark is not everyone's idea of a welcome.
| Question | Why it matters on either lake |
|---|---|
| How do we reach the boat? | Road to the door or shikara from a ghat changes your arrival, your bags and your first hour |
| Which ghat or corner is it? | Position decides the noise, the view and the walk to anywhere else |
| Does the price include shikara rides? | Some rides to shore are included and some are paid on the spot |
| What heats the rooms? | Nights are cold outside summer and heating differs from boat to boat |
| What are the meal arrangements? | Room only, breakfast, breakfast and dinner, or all meals |
Can you stay on both lakes?
Yes. Each houseboat has a fixed place, so you book a different boat for each night, for example one night on Dal and one on Nigeen. The transfer between them is short, but it is a transfer, so it suits stays of four nights or more better than a three-day trip. Our Summer Special lists a shikara ride on Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake before the houseboat check-in on its last evening. Tell us your dates and we check what is free and quote both stays together.
How do the seasons change the choice?
| Season | On either lake | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Blossom and cold nights | Heating and hot water |
| Summer | Warm days, the busiest weeks | How early to book, and how loud nearby boats get |
| Autumn | Clear air and chinar colour | Heating from mid-autumn, when nights cool quickly |
| Winter | Mist and frost, with ice at the edge of the water in cold spells | Heating, hot water and power backup before you pay |
Our winter guide and our comparison of houseboat or hotel in Srinagar are worth reading if you are travelling in the cold months.
Which TDI houseboats are on which lake?
Our six houseboat property pages each describe a stay on Dal Lake: Butt's Clermont, Chicago Group, Mascot, New Jacquline Heritage, Sukoon and WelcomHeritage Gurkha. We do not tell you a boat is on Nigeen unless we have confirmed it for your dates. If you want Nigeen, tell us at the start. We ask the owners which boats there have rooms and quote them in writing, naming the lake, the ghat and how you reach the boat. Our houseboats in Srinagar guide compares the six with public listings.
Package pages name houseboats by tier, not the six above, so ask which lake the boat in your tier is on. The figures below come from each package's own price table, per person on twin sharing, ex-Srinagar, for two travellers.
| Package with a houseboat night | Nights | Per person, two travellers |
|---|---|---|
| 3N/4D Quick Getaway | 3 | ₹11,950 |
| 4N/5D Kashmir Classic | 4 | ₹13,800 |
| 5N/6D Explorer | 5 | ₹15,900 |
| 5N/6D Gulmarg Stay | 5 | ₹16,300 |
A quick decision guide

|---|---|---|
| Have two or three days | Dal Lake | Less transfer time and more within reach |
| Want to walk to cafes and the lakefront | Dal Lake | The Boulevard is beside the water |
| Want stillness and have a driver | Nigeen Lake | Fewer boats and a village feel |
| Are on a honeymoon | Either | Choose by mood: lively evenings or quiet mornings |
| Have time for four or more nights | Both | One night on each lake gives both moods |
What is the next step?
Send your dates, the number of rooms and travellers, and the lake you prefer through our contact page or on WhatsApp. We reply with the boats that fit, name the lake and ghat for each, and tell you what the price includes. For stays on land instead of the water, see our Srinagar hotel booking page, and for every stay we list, our hotels and houseboats page.
Questions travellers ask
Is Nigeen Lake better than Dal Lake for a houseboat?
Neither is better in itself. Dal is livelier and closer to the Boulevard and the sights. Nigeen is smaller and calmer, with fewer boats and longer transfers. Choose by the mood you want and the time you have, and look at the exact boat and ghat.
Is a Nigeen houseboat cheaper than a Dal Lake houseboat?
Not necessarily. The price depends on the boat, its class, the meal plan and your dates more than on the lake. We do not print a rate here. Send your dates and we quote named boats in writing, so you can compare like with like.
Which lake is better for a honeymoon?
Either can be. Couples who want quiet mornings and few boats often prefer Nigeen, and couples who want lively evenings and shikara rides near the Boulevard often prefer Dal. Tell us the mood you want and we suggest named boats for your dates.
Can I take a shikara between Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake?
The two lakes are joined by a narrow channel, so a shikara can link them, but it takes time and arrangements vary by boat. Ask the boat about its own shikara and what is included before you rely on one for sightseeing.
Are houseboats on both lakes cold in winter?
Winter nights are cold on any lake, and heating differs from boat to boat. Ask what heats the room, for how many hours, how hot water works and whether there is power backup. Cold-sensitive travellers and infants may prefer a heated land hotel.
Do TDI packages use Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake houseboats?
Our package pages describe the houseboat night on Dal Lake and name houseboats by tier. Ask which lake the boat in your tier is on. If you want Nigeen, tell us at the start and we ask the owners what is available and price it separately.
