Most visitors to Srinagar picture Dal Lake, but the city has a second, smaller lake that many returning travellers prefer. This page, from the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar, explains what Nigeen Lake is like, how a houseboat stay there differs from one on Dal, which of our houseboats we list and where, and what to ask before you book. Where we do not know something for your dates, we say so and we ask the boat's owner before we quote.

What is Nigeen Lake, and how does it differ from Dal Lake?

Nigeen is a small lake on the edge of Dal's water system, lined with willows and poplars and joined to the main basin by a narrow channel. It has fewer boats on the water and more of a village feel. Houseboats are moored here as they are on Dal, and a stay follows the same pattern: a wooden boat with carved interiors, meals on board and a shikara to take you ashore. What changes is the mood.

EveningsMore to see and eat within reachPeaceful, though some travellers find it too secluded

Neither lake is better in itself. A houseboat's exact position matters more than its lake name, so we look at the boat, the ghat and the access, not only the label.

Which TDI houseboats are on Nigeen Lake?

Our answer is a straight one. Each of our six houseboat property pages describes a stay on Dal Lake, and we do not tell you a boat is on Nigeen unless we have confirmed it for your dates. Public listings do not always agree on which lake a particular boat sits, which is why the lake and ghat are the first things we confirm. A houseboat is moored in one place, so its lake is a fact about the boat, not a choice you make when you book.

If you are set on Nigeen, tell us at the start. We ask the owners which boats on Nigeen have rooms for your dates and quote them in writing, naming the lake, the ghat and how you reach the boat. Our houseboats in Srinagar guide compares our six with public listings, and our Dal Lake houseboat page describes a stay on the main lake.

Who should choose a Nigeen houseboat?

  • Couples who want a quiet lakeside stay and a slower pace; see our honeymoon packages.
  • Older travellers who prefer calm mornings and fewer vendors calling from boats; see our senior citizen packages.
  • Photographers and early risers who want mist on still water and few boats in the frame.
  • Return visitors who have done Dal's waterfront and want a different view of the city.
  • Travellers with a rental car or a driver, so that distance from the Boulevard is not an issue.

Who may prefer Dal Lake instead?

  • First-time visitors who want shikara rides, floating gardens and the Boulevard's cafes within easy reach.
  • Short stays, where every transfer costs a share of your time.
  • Groups who like an evening walk along the lakefront.
  • Travellers who want to be close to the Mughal gardens and the old city; see our Dal Lake guide.

What does a day on a Nigeen houseboat look like?

  1. Morning: tea or kahwa on the deck while mist lifts off the water, then breakfast in the boat's dining room.
  2. Late morning: a shikara to the shore, then a drive to the Mughal gardens or the old city; see our Srinagar sightseeing tour.
  3. Afternoon: a rest on board, or a slow shikara ride around the quieter channels.
  4. Evening: dinner on the boat, usually Kashmiri home-style food, and an early night in a still place.
  5. Next day: a drive out to Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonmarg, returning to the boat or moving on.

How do the seasons change a houseboat stay?

SeasonWhat a lake stay is likeWhat to ask
Spring (March to May)Blossom, cold nights and the tulip garden nearbyHeating and hot water, since nights are cold
Summer (June to August)Green banks, warm days, lotus in the shallows and the busiest weeksHow early to book, and how loud nearby boats get
Autumn (September to November)Clear air and chinar colour on the shoreHeating from mid-autumn, when nights cool quickly
Winter (December to February)Mist, frost and, in cold spells, ice at the edges of the waterHeating, hot water and power backup, before you pay

Houseboats can feel cold in the depths of winter, and heating differs from boat to boat. Our winter guide and our Kashmir in December guide say more about cold-weather stays.

What should you ask before you book a houseboat?

  • The boat's name, its lake and its ghat, in writing.
  • How you reach the boat: by road to the door, or by shikara from a ghat, and how bags are carried.
  • The meal plan in plain words: room only, breakfast, breakfast and dinner, or all meals.
  • Heating, hot water hours and whether there is power backup.
  • Whether shikara rides to the shore are included, and how many.
  • The number of rooms and bathrooms, and whether the price is per room or per boat.

Which TDI packages include a houseboat night?

Our four packages below each include a night on a Dal Lake houseboat, a one-hour shikara ride, daily breakfast and dinner, and Srinagar airport pickup and drop. Package pages name houseboats by tier, not the six above, so ask which lake the boat in your tier is on. The figures below come from each package's own price table, per person on twin sharing, ex-Srinagar.

If you want a different houseboat from the one in a package, ask us to price the change.

How do you take the next step?

Send your dates, the number of rooms and travellers, and the lake you prefer through our contact page or on WhatsApp. We reply with the boats that fit, name the lake and ghat for each, and tell you what the price includes. For hotels on land instead of the water, see our Srinagar hotel booking page, and for the whole list of stays, our hotels and houseboats page.

Questions travellers ask

Is Nigeen Lake better than Dal Lake for a houseboat?

Neither is better in itself. Nigeen is smaller and quieter with fewer boats, and suits travellers who want calm. Dal is livelier and closer to the Boulevard, cafes and sights. Choose by the mood you want and how much time you have, and look at the exact boat and ghat.

Does TDI have houseboats on Nigeen Lake?

Our six houseboat property pages all describe stays on Dal Lake. If you want Nigeen, tell us at the start and we ask the owners which boats there have rooms for your dates, then quote them in writing with the lake, ghat and access named. We do not call a boat a Nigeen stay unless we have confirmed it.

How far is Nigeen Lake from Dal Lake's sights?

Nigeen is part of the same water system but away from the busiest stretch of the Boulevard. It is a short drive to the lakefront and the Mughal gardens, and the exact time depends on the boat, the ghat and the traffic. Allow some extra time for each transfer.

Are houseboats on Nigeen Lake cold in winter?

Winter nights are cold on any lake, and heating differs from boat to boat. Ask what heats the room, for how many hours, how hot water works and whether the boat has power backup. Cold-sensitive travellers, infants and older relatives may prefer a heated land hotel in the depth of winter.

Can I stay on both lakes in one trip?

Yes. Each houseboat has a fixed place, so you book a different boat for each night, for example a night on Dal and a night on Nigeen. Tell us your dates and we check availability, make the transfers between the two and quote the stays together.

How do I reach a Nigeen houseboat from the airport?

You travel by road from Srinagar airport to the lake edge or a ghat, then continue by shikara or on foot, depending on the boat. Some boats have road access and others do not. We tell you which applies when we quote, and our packages include airport pickup and drop.
