TDI Holiday Ventures offers Tempo Traveller service from Srinagar to Kargil, covering a scenic 204-kilometer journey through some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Himalayas. Kargil serves as an important stopover for travelers heading to Leh.

The Route

The journey takes you through Sonamarg, over the Zoji La pass, down into the Dras Valley, and into Kargil town. Dras is known as the second coldest inhabited place on Earth and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Historical Significance

Kargil gained prominence during the 1999 Kargil War. Today, it is a peaceful town with a rich culture, ancient monasteries, and warm hospitality. The Kargil War Memorial is a must-visit for every traveler.

What the journey is like

The road leaves Srinagar, climbs through Sonmarg and crosses the Zoji La, one of the best-known passes of the Himalaya. On the far side the landscape changes: the green valley gives way to bare, dry mountains and the cold Dras valley, one of the coldest inhabited places in the country. A few hours later you reach Kargil, a quiet town on the Suru river. A Tempo Traveller keeps a group together on this long road, and push-back seats let people rest.

What to see in Kargil

Kargil is a stop as much as a destination. The war memorial at Dras is moving and worth the halt; in the town and the Suru valley there are old monasteries, mosques and viewpoints. Season, road and altitude

The Zoji La is usually open from about June to October, and heavy snow can close it in the colder months, so the trip is planned for the open season. Landslides and convoy rules can slow the road even in summer. The altitude is moderate compared with the passes beyond Kargil, but give your group a rest and keep water handy. We confirm road status before you leave.
