Betaab Valley — Bollywood's Favourite Kashmir Destination

Named after the Sunny Deol–Amrita Singh film Betaab (1983), Betaab Valley is one of Kashmir's most photographed destinations. But beyond the Bollywood fame, it is a genuinely stunning alpine valley that deserves a spot on every Pahalgam itinerary.

Location & Access Betaab Valley is 15 km from Pahalgam town, a 30-minute drive along the Lidder River. The road is in good condition, though narrow in stretches. The valley entry fee is ₹50 per person. Parking is available at the entrance. The valley is open from May to November; winter snow (December–April) blocks access to all but the most determined trekkers.

The Valley Experience The valley is a bowl-shaped meadow ringed by deodar and pine forests, with a stream running through its centre. A short walk from the parking area takes you into the meadow — expect to spend 1–2 hours exploring, photographing, and simply soaking in the views. Pony rides are available for those who want to go deeper into the upper meadows. The ground is grassy and uneven — wear sturdy shoes.

Bollywood & Film Connection Dozens of Bollywood films have shot here after Betaab made it famous — including Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and Rockstar. The iconic scene from Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani where Bunny and Naina walk through a meadow was filmed here. The local guides love sharing film trivia — ask them for the exact spots.

Nearby Attractions Aru Valley is 5 km ahead of Betaab Valley — combine both into a single half-day excursion. Chandanwari (15 km from Pahalgam, beyond Betaab) is the Amarnath Yatra base camp and offers a stark, rocky landscape. The road from Betaab to Chandanwari is rough but scenic.
