In-depth guides to Kashmir and Ladakh's most-loved destinations — Srinagar's Dal Lake, Gulmarg's gondola runs, Pahalgam's valleys and beyond. Practical, first-hand notes from a team that has walked every trail.

Just 12 km from Pahalgam town, Aru Valley offers a quieter, more intimate alpine experience than its famous neighbour Betaab Valley. Here is everything you need to know.

Named after the Sunny Deol–Amrita Singh film Betaab (1983), Betaab Valley is one of Kashmir's most photographed destinations. But beyond the Bollywood fame, it is a genuinely stunning alpine valley that deserves a spot on every Pahalgam itinerary.

Status note, checked 25 October 2026: Baisaran meadow above Pahalgam was reported closed on 22 April 2026, and we found no report of a reopening. Parts of this page were written before that, so we confirm access before you travel and never include the meadow in a plan unless it is open. The dated notices are in Is Kashmir safe to visit?.
ReadSrinagar is the base, with the lake, the gardens and the old city. Gulmarg is the snow and meadow place, Pahalgam is the river and forest valley and Sonmarg is the glacier meadow on the road to Ladakh. Each suits a season and a mood, and our Gulmarg vs Pahalgam vs Sonmarg comparison helps you decide how to share your days.
For the hill places, read our Gulmarg guide to the best time, our Pahalgam travel guide and our Pahalgam itinerary. For the valleys, read our Betaab Valley guide and Aru Valley guide. For quieter places, read our hidden gems guide.
Most trips link three or four places in a loop from Srinagar. Our Kashmir 5-day and 7-day itineraries show how. Tell us your dates and interests and we suggest a plan with a spare day for weather.
Srinagar is the base for every trip, followed by Gulmarg or Pahalgam depending on the season and what you want to do.
Three or four at a relaxed pace: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and, optionally, Sonmarg or a quiet meadow.
Gulmarg is the best place for snow, from December to March, with the deepest snow in January and February and the gondola for views.
Pahalgam's riverside resorts and cottages, or a quieter meadow such as Doodhpathri, are good choices.
