Planning for every age
A good family trip gives children and grandparents something they each enjoy and avoids anything that wears either out. Choose May to September for the most reliable weather, keep drives short and add a spare day.

A shikara ride, a houseboat night, garden lawns, meadow picnics, the lower gondola and snow play are the usual favourites. We tell you honestly what is too much for a group, and plan around the slowest traveller.
Looking after everyone on the road
Family trips succeed on small comforts: snacks and water in the car, a light blanket for sleepy children, a stop for anyone feeling unwell and drives that end before dark. Keep one rest day in the middle of a longer trip, avoid long drives straight after a flight and choose hotels with heating and meals on site. Tell us about any health needs in advance, and we plan the vehicle and the pace around them.

When is the best time for a family trip?
May to September for reliable weather, and September and October for calm and colour. Winter suits older children who want snow.
How many days do we need?
Five to seven days for a relaxed family trip with a spare day. A shorter plan of three or four days is possible with fewer places.
