What do the US and other governments advise about Jammu and Kashmir?

We could not open the US State Department's India page, which refused our request, so we do not quote it directly. Our own safety page, last verified on 25 October 2026, records the US level as Level 4, Do Not Travel, for Jammu and Kashmir except eastern Ladakh and Leh, with India overall at Level 2, as still reported in force on 20 August 2026, the latest report we found. Please read the State Department page yourself for the current wording. The India page of Britain's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (checked 4 November 2026) advised people to stay away from the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir altogether, naming Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Srinagar city and the Jammu-Srinagar highway, and the Canadian government's page said to avoid all travel there.

TDI does not play this advice down and cannot change it. Check your policy wording, ask your insurer in writing whether a Kashmir trip is covered, enrol your trip with the embassy service you normally use and decide for yourself. Nothing on this page is a guarantee of safety.

How do you fly from the US to Srinagar?

Skyscanner's page that we could read prints fares in rupees, so convert at the rate of the day. It reports that no airline flies New York to Srinagar direct; one-stop flights start at ₹107,845, the cheapest flight is ₹65,222 and next month's returns start at ₹156,707. These are the lowest figures, not typical fares. A flight to Delhi followed by a second flight north is the usual plan.

From Delhi the second flight is direct on Momondo every day and takes 1 h 20 min at its fastest; the Delhi page has the dated details. After a flight this long, allow a rest day at the start or end if you can, and tell us when you land so day one fits.

Can US passport holders use the Indian e-Visa?

Check the official portal's eligibility list for your passport: the USA is on it. Choose between 30 days, 365 days and five years of validity, and the e-Arrival card, which foreigners and OCI card holders complete online, can be filed in the 72 hours before arrival. Fees, processing times and required documents change, so confirm all three on the portal itself on the day you apply, and use no other site.

When should you travel from the United States?

US school calendars are set by district, so check yours. Two federal holidays fall on Monday, 31 May (Memorial Day) and Monday, 5 July (Independence Day, observed) next year, according to the Office of Personnel Management, which can anchor a long weekend. The weather is the other half of the decision.

What does a Kashmir trip cost for US travellers?

A TDI land package for an American visitor comprises deluxe room nights, taxes, the Shikara ride, breakfast and dinner daily and private-vehicle transfers, with the Srinagar airport pickup and drop part of them. Flights, lunches and entry tickets are billed separately. All TDI prices are rupees per person; no dollar conversion is applied, so use the exchange rate when you pay, and the airfare is quoted apart for that reason too.

Prices on this page are per person. Doodhpathri's listing could be seasonal, so confirm its rate for your dates. The overview's lowest figure, ₹8,550 per person, applies to the cheapest package only. How many days do you need from the US?

Think of the long-haul flight and the onward leg as part of the trip, and budget at least five nights on the ground. Our starting plan is the 4N/5D Classic (Srinagar, Sonmarg, Gulmarg, Pahalgam).
