Kashmir New Year Tour Packages: 29 December to 2 January

Our Kashmir New Year plan runs four nights, arriving 29 December and leaving 2 January, on the 4N/5D Kashmir Classic from ₹13,800 per person for two. It is peak season, snow is possible but never certain, and heating and power vary by property, so we confirm the rate, the rooms and the heating for your dates before you pay.

Key facts

Suggested window

Best for

Weather
Cold days and nights around or below freezing in Srinagar; snow is possible in Gulmarg and Sonmarg, and Srinagar snow is a bonus, not a plan
How we plan it
Hotels by default, Gulmarg early in the trip, a spare day to swap, and heating and generator questions asked in writing
Price basis
From the package tables, per person on twin sharing. The tables do not split seasons, so we confirm the New Year week rate for your dates

New Year in Kashmir is cold, bright and quiet in a way few places in India are, and for some guests that is the point. It is also the busiest week of the winter, with rooms filling early and the weather deciding which day trips happen. We are the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar. We plan the week around a four-night window, from 29 December to 2 January, and place the days so that a closed road or a stopped lift does not ruin the trip. Our packages use a private vehicle, so this is your own trip on those dates, not a fixed group departure.

What does a Kashmir New Year trip look like?

Arriving on 29 December keeps the 31st clear of airport transfers and check-in queues, and leaving on 2 January avoids the crowded departure day after the holiday. The plan below is a pattern, and we re-order it for the snow and the roads on the day.

DatePlanNote
29 DecemberAirport pickup, check-in, a short first outing in SrinagarSunset comes in the early evening, a little after 5 pm, so keep the afternoon short
30 DecemberGulmarg, earlyThe day a shut road or a stopped lift spoils most; we put it early, with a later day to swap into
31 DecemberPahalgam or Sonmarg, whichever road is openBe back in Srinagar by dusk; spend the evening at your hotel
1 JanuaryA slow day: the old city, shopping, kahwa, or the swap day for Gulmarg or Sonmarg; see our Srinagar sightseeing tour pageKeep it flexible
2 JanuaryAirport dropLeave slack. A same-day connection after a Srinagar departure is the first thing weather breaks

Which package suits New Year, and what does it cost?

The 4N/5D Kashmir Classic fits the window exactly, with Sonmarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam as day trips from Srinagar. Every figure is copied from the package's own price table, per person on twin sharing, ex-Srinagar.

The tables do not split seasons. New Year week is peak season, so the rate and the terms can differ from the table. We tell you both in writing for your dates before you pay, and we do not call anything a New Year price until we have checked the rooms. Our site's headline starting price is ₹8,550 per person; for two people in this week, read the table above and ask.

Will it snow on New Year?

Possibly, and nobody can promise it. Gulmarg and Sonmarg are the realistic places, because they are higher and colder. Srinagar can also see snow, but we count it as a bonus. Some winters begin with heavy snow in December and some stay dry until January, so we plan for cold and clear and treat snow as a gift. Our Kashmir in December and Kashmir in January guides go deeper, and our winter and snow packages page says why we do not sell a winter Ladakh road trip. For the Gulmarg lifts, see our Gulmarg gondola booking page.

What should you ask about heating, hot water and generators?

This is the point that decides whether the trip is cosy or miserable. Our Gulmarg hotel guide says most mid-range hotels there do not have central heating and suggests requesting a room heater in winter. Our skiing guide tells guests to confirm heating and hot water because winter Gulmarg has occasional power fluctuations. Our Dal Lake houseboat page says most deluxe and luxury boats have power backup while standard boats may have limited electricity. The package tables do not list heating or generators for any named hotel, so we ask, and we suggest you ask us to ask.

Ask the propertyWhy it matters
What heats the room: central heating, a room heater, an electric blanket or a wood or charcoal stove?A room heater warms a small room well and a big one badly
Is heating in the rate or charged separately? Some properties charge per night for a heater
Does a generator or inverter run the heater and the geyser during a power cut?Winter power cuts are common, and a heater on mains power stops with them
Is there hot water in the morning, and for how long?A geyser may not recover quickly after a cold night
On a houseboat, how do you reach the shore if the lake edge is icy?Ice can make the gangway and the shikara landing slippery
Is any New Year's Eve dinner included, or extra? Some hotels hold a 31 December dinner and charge for it separately

Ask for the answers in writing. One safety point: charcoal or wood stoves can fill a closed room with carbon monoxide, so keep a window slightly open and follow the hotel's instructions. If a houseboat's heating is not confirmed, a hotel is the safer default for a December night; the published packages put a houseboat night first and last, and we re-price a hotel-only plan if you prefer. Our Srinagar hotel guide and Gulmarg hotel guide list options.

How does New Year week change rooms, roads and flights?

  • Rooms. Good rooms in Srinagar and Gulmarg go early, and the gap between a heated, well-placed room and a leftover one is wide. Tell us your dates as soon as you have them.
  • Roads. More vehicles go up to Gulmarg, and the road can slow after snow. A day can start late and end early.
  • Lifts. Queues at the Gulmarg gondola can be long on holiday days, and wind or weather can stop it. Tickets are extra.
  • Flights. Fares are high and seats fill, and a delayed or cancelled flight is more likely in winter. Keep a spare day before any onward connection.
  • The highway. The Jammu to Srinagar road can close after snow, which matters if you arrive by road. Our how to reach Kashmir guide covers the options.

What should you pack for a Kashmir New Year?

  • Thermal base layers, a fleece or wool mid-layer, and a down jacket that suits sub-zero evenings.
  • Waterproof boots with good grip, several pairs of wool socks, waterproof gloves and a cap that covers the ears.
  • Sunglasses or snow goggles, since snow glare is strong even on an overcast day.
  • Lip balm and a thick moisturiser; the cold air is dry.
  • A power bank and a small torch, as winter power cuts are common, and some cash for places where cards do not work.

Our packing list has the longer version, and our winter guide covers the season.

What is the next step?

Book early. Send your dates, the number of travellers, any children or older parents, and whether you want hotels throughout or a houseboat night, through our contact page. Our site says a Srinagar planner replies within 30 minutes. We then send a written quote that lists the nights, the vehicle, the heating answers and any extras as separate lines. For the family version of the trip, see our family packages; for a couple, our honeymoon packages. Before you book, read our safety guide, which explains how travel advisories change.

Questions travellers ask

Which dates do your Kashmir New Year packages cover?

We suggest arriving on 29 December and leaving on 2 January, which is four nights on the 4N/5D Kashmir Classic. Our packages use a private vehicle, so it is your own trip, and you can shift the dates. We confirm the rooms and the rate for the exact days before you pay.

Will it snow in Kashmir at New Year?

It may, but nobody can promise it. Gulmarg and Sonmarg are the realistic places for snow; Srinagar snow is a bonus. Winters vary, with some starting with heavy snow in December and others staying dry into January. We plan for cold and clear and keep a spare day to swap if the snow arrives or the roads close.

Is New Year week more expensive than the package table?

It can be. The tables do not split seasons. We check the rooms for your dates and send a written rate and terms before you pay. We do not label any figure a New Year price until we have confirmed it.

Is a houseboat a good idea in winter?

Only once the heating is confirmed for that boat. Our houseboat page says most deluxe and luxury boats have power backup while standard boats may have limited electricity. Heating differs, and an icy gangway can be slippery. A hotel is the safer default in December, and we re-price a hotel-only plan if you prefer.

Can we count on the Gulmarg gondola?

No. Wind, snow and maintenance can stop it, and queues can be long on holiday days. We place Gulmarg early in the trip so a closed day can be swapped. Gondola tickets are not in the package price; our gondola booking page explains how we help, and we confirm the current arrangements for your dates.

What if the roads close after snow?

We swap the days. A closed Gulmarg or Sonmarg road is replaced by a Srinagar day, and the closed trip moves to the spare day if there is one. If the Jammu highway closes, the issue is your arrival or departure, so keep a spare day on both ends. We cannot promise a road, a lift or a flight on a given day.

Is New Year's Eve celebrated in Srinagar?

Many guests celebrate quietly at their hotel, and some properties host a dinner on 31 December. Ask whether yours does and whether it is included or extra. We keep the evening free in the plan and bring you back to Srinagar by dusk, because winter roads are slow and the cold arrives early.

How early should I book for New Year?

As soon as your dates are firm, because good rooms in Srinagar and Gulmarg go early and flights fill. We confirm availability before you pay.
