Kerala and Kashmir — Gods Own Country meets Paradise on Earth. This combination of two of India’s most beautiful regions is increasingly popular among Malayali travellers seeking new experiences.
Flight Connectivity
Kochi International Airport offers direct flights to Srinagar via IndiGo. Trivandrum and Calicut travellers typically connect via Kochi or Bangalore. Total travel time from Kerala is approximately 4-5 hours including connections. Fares from Kochi start from ₹10,000 round trip.
Popular Packages
Kerala travellers love the 5-night Kashmir Explorer (₹12,500/person) which covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonmarg. The 6-night Luxury Kashmir (₹18,000/person) is popular among couples. Custom packages with houseboat stays are specifically requested by Malayali travellers.
Best Time from Kerala
Summer (April-June) is the most popular season as Kerala’s monsoon approaches. Autumn (September-November) offers clear skies and pleasant weather. Winter (December-February) attracts those wanting snow — a rare experience for most Keralites.
What Malayali Travellers Love
Kashmir’s houseboats remind Malayali travellers of Kerala’s own houseboat culture, creating an instant connection. The Wazwan feast, with its multiple courses, appeals to the Malayali love for elaborate meals. The valley’s tea gardens and spice-scented air feel familiar yet distinctly different.
Kerala-Specific Services
TDI Holiday Ventures provides Malayali-friendly meal options (rice-based, vegetarian), Malayalam-speaking guides on request, and itineraries that match Kerala’s relaxed travel pace.
Getting from Kerala to Srinagar
Kochi has direct or one-stop flights to Srinagar in some seasons, while travellers from Trivandrum and Calicut often connect through Kochi, Bangalore or Delhi. Total travel time is usually several hours including the connection. Check the current timetable and book early for April to June and the festival weeks. Keep connections comfortable, and carry a warm layer in hand luggage, since arrival can be cold. Land in Srinagar in daylight where you can.
When Kerala travellers go
April to June is the most popular time, with the pre-monsoon heat at home and cool green hills in Kashmir. September to November is the second favourite, with clear skies and autumn colour, and the Onam and festival breaks fit it. December to February is for snow, which is a real novelty for most Keralites. July and August have monsoon at home and showers and yatra traffic in Kashmir, so many Kerala travellers skip them.
What travellers from Kerala usually ask for
Kerala travellers love houseboats and find Dal Lake's wooden boats a delightful parallel to the backwaters of home, and they enjoy comparing the food: Kashmir's wazwan feast, rich with meat and spices, appeals to those who love a big meal, and there are good vegetarian choices too. Many travel as families or with friends and ask for a gentle pace, a warm hotel and a guide who explains the places. Honeymooners ask for a private shikara and a quiet stay.
A plan that fits a Kerala schedule
A six-night plan with two nights in Srinagar including a houseboat, one in Gulmarg, two in Pahalgam and a spare night in Srinagar suits a Kerala family. With seven nights, add Sonmarg or Doodhpathri. The journey is long, so keep the first day light. For snow, plan Gulmarg for a clear morning. Our Kashmir 7-day itinerary and houseboat guide explain the days and the boats.
Packages that suit this trip
Kerala travellers often take a longer break and enjoy a fuller circuit with a houseboat night and extra valley days.
| Package | Nights | From, per person (two travellers) |
|---|---|---|
| 5N/6D Kashmir Explorer | 5N/6D | ₹15,900 |
| 6N/7D Kashmir with Doodhpathri | 6N/7D | ₹18,200 |
| 6N/7D Kashmir Summer Special | 6N/7D | ₹18,400 |
Prices are the lowest cell in each package's own price table, per person for two travellers sharing, from Srinagar, as printed on the package page; they change with group size, season and hotel tier, and we confirm the final amount in writing before you pay. Flights are not included.
Practical notes for travellers from Kerala
Kerala's warm climate makes Kashmir's cold the main change: carry layers in every season and thermals, a down jacket, waterproof boots and gloves from November to February. Carry ID for every traveller, medicines in hand luggage and a power bank. Prepaid mobile connections from other states may not work in Jammu and Kashmir, so ask your operator. Language is not a barrier: our drivers and hosts speak Hindi, Urdu and English.
Backwaters and Dal Lake
The comparison with Kerala's backwaters is natural but misleading in one way: Dal Lake is a still lake in a ring of mountains, not a network of canals, and the pleasure is in the shikara, the floating gardens and the early mist. Our Dal Lake vs Nigeen Lake houseboats guide helps you choose a boat, and our houseboat vs hotel guide helps you decide how many nights to spend afloat.
Snow for the first time
Many Kerala travellers touch snow for the first time in Gulmarg. Come prepared: waterproof boots and gloves, layers and sunglasses, and a plan to keep children dry and warm. Play in short stretches and warm up with hot drinks. See our Gulmarg snowfall guide for what to expect, and our packing list for what to bring.
How booking works
Tell us your dates, the number of travellers, your food preferences and the style of stay. We suggest a plan, confirm hotels, vehicles and inclusions in writing and keep a spare day. You book the flights, and we fit the plan to your times.
Questions travellers ask
Are there direct flights from Kerala to Srinagar?
Direct and one-stop options exist from some airports, and others connect through Bangalore or Delhi. Check the current timetable.
How long should a Kerala family stay?
Six or seven nights. The journey is long, so a slower pace with a spare day works best.
How are Kashmiri houseboats different from Kerala's?
Kashmiri houseboats are carved-wood boats moored on a lake, with a dining room and a shikara to take you ashore. They do not move, unlike the backwater boats.
Is the food a problem for Kerala travellers?
Not usually. Hotels offer vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices, and we can ask for milder spices. Tell us your preferences.
When should Keralites go?
April to June, September to November, or December to February if you want snow. Avoid peak yatra traffic if possible.
