Are there direct flights from Punjab to Srinagar?

From Amritsar and Chandigarh, yes: Wikipedia's airline list for Srinagar names both cities under IndiGo, and Kayak's route pages (checked 25 October 2026) show the sample itineraries and fares below. Fares change, so read them as a range, not an offer.

Both sample flights leave in the afternoon, so the first evening in Kashmir is arrival and check-in.

Which train runs from Amritsar to Katra, and what comes next?

The Vande Bharat between Amritsar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra runs as trains 26405 (Amritsar to Katra) and 26406 (Katra to Amritsar). News On AIR reported on 25 March 2026 that Northern Railway would run it via Gurdaspur and Batala instead of Jalandhar. goodreturns reported on 16 June 2026 that the service, suspended on 25 November 2025 for the construction of a railway bridge, was set to resume with a revised route via Gurdaspur, effective 16 June, with the timings from 17 June.

goodreturns lists the train as running on all days except Saturday, covering 285 km in about 5 hours 5 minutes. ConfirmTkt's pages for 26405 and 26406 list the same times as the table. Read the days, times and fare for your date on IRCTC before you book.

The Srinagar leg is a second Vande Bharat that starts at Jammu Tawi; IANS lists Katra as a halt on 26401 and 26404 but prints no Katra times. Our Vaishno Devi and Kashmir page lists 26401 leaving Jammu Tawi at 06:20 and reaching Srinagar at 11:10, 4 hours 40 to 50 minutes in all (IANS, 29 April 2026). IANS lists 26401 as off on Tuesdays and 26403 as off on Wednesdays, while the Kashmir Observer reports no Tuesday service, so check your date on IRCTC before you fix a night.

Ludhiana is on a different line: the Delhi to Katra Vande Bharat 22439 stops at Ludhiana Junction. ConfirmTkt lists it leaving Ludhiana at 09:21, reaching Jammu Tawi at 12:43 and Katra at 14:20, and sites disagree on its running days (six or seven a week). With 26403 listed (IANS) to leave Jammu Tawi at 13:20, 37 minutes after 22439 is listed (ConfirmTkt) to arrive at 12:43, a delay of more than 37 minutes to 22439 would miss it, so plan a night in Jammu or Katra.

Can you drive, and are there buses?

You can drive. The Srinagar district administration (page updated 16 March 2026) gives the first two rows below; routing sites give the Amritsar and Ludhiana rows.

The district administration says NH-44 can be affected by landslides or snowfall particularly in winter, November to March, and tells drivers to check Traffic Police J&K advisories before travel. We suggest a night in Jammu so that the Jammu to Srinagar drive starts in the morning; for a private car on that leg, see our Jammu to Srinagar taxi page.

Private operators run Volvo and sleeper buses on the Jammu to Srinagar route and from other major cities in North India, says the district administration, whose bus text does not name Amritsar, Ludhiana or Chandigarh. The same page says these are available via online booking portals like redBus or IRCTC Bus.

Can you add Vaishno Devi to a Kashmir trip from Punjab?

Yes, and from Punjab the train makes it easy. The Amritsar–Katra Vande Bharat reaches Katra, the base for the yatra, and Katra is a halt on some Srinagar Vande Bharat trains. Our suggestion, set out on our Vaishno Devi and Kashmir page, is Katra first and Kashmir second, because the yatra is the half most likely to run late.

What does a Kashmir package from Punjab cost?

TDI's overview page says packages start from ₹8,550 per person for a 3-night trip, but the 3N/4D package page's own table has ₹11,950 for two travellers, ₹9,120 for four and ₹8,100 for six, so ₹8,550 matches none of them. The same overview page lists the 4N/5D Classic at ₹10,400 and the 5N/6D Explorer at ₹12,500 per person, which also match none of the package-page figures below. The prices below are per person on twin sharing with the standard hotel category, ex-Srinagar. Airfare, lunch and Gulmarg gondola tickets are not included, and neither are the train, the Katra nights or a helicopter.

A worked example, our arithmetic: two travellers on the 4N/5D Classic pay 2 × ₹13,800 = ₹27,600 for Kashmir. Kayak's typical Amritsar return range of ₹7,061 to ₹10,863, which we read as one traveller's fare, comes to ₹14,122 to ₹21,726 for two, so the total is ₹41,722 to ₹49,326, before lunches, gondola tickets, the train or any Katra nights. How many days do you need from Punjab?

Count the journey inside the trip. Our arithmetic from the times above:

• Direct flight: the sample flights land at 17:15 from Amritsar and 16:55 from Chandigarh, so plan the first evening as arrival and check-in. TDI's 3N/4D page puts the Mughal Gardens and a shikara ride after check-in on its first day, so ask TDI how an evening arrival changes day one.
• Amritsar train, Srinagar next morning: 26405 reaches Jammu Tawi at 8:03 pm, and boarding 26401 at 06:20 puts you in Srinagar at 11:10 on day two, so a 4N/5D package ends on day six.

When should you leave Punjab for Kashmir?

Wikipedia's 1991–2020 climate tables put Amritsar's average daily high at 39.4 °C in May and 38.9 °C in June, against 24.7 °C and 28.5 °C in Srinagar.
