How to read this plan
This is a template, not a timetable. Each day has one or two things that matter and plenty of room around them. Swap days if the weather changes, drop an activity that does not interest you and spend the saved time doing nothing, which is what a honeymoon is for. Seasons change what is possible: in winter, Gulmarg becomes snow and Pahalgam is quiet; in spring, tulips and blossom change the garden days. Our Kashmir honeymoon guide explains the choices behind it.
Day 1: Arrival and the lake
Arrive in Srinagar, meet your driver and drive to your first stay. A houseboat on the lake is the classic choice, reached by a short shikara ride, and the first evening is for settling in: a cup of kahwa on the deck, a slow sunset ride on the water and a candlelit dinner on board or on the shore. Do not plan anything more strenuous after the flight, and let the quiet of the lake do its work. Read about a night afloat in our boat house in Srinagar guide.
Day 2: Gardens, craft and the old city
Start late. Spend the morning in the Mughal gardens, when the terraces are quiet and the light is soft, and see our guide to the gardens for the order. In the afternoon browse a shawl and papier-mâché workshop, then walk a short stretch of the old city; our old Srinagar walk explains the route. Dinner can be a Kashmiri meal, with the wazwan dishes the valley is known for.
Day 3: Drive to Gulmarg
Drive to Gulmarg in the morning, about two hours from Srinagar, through the town of Tangmarg. Check in, have lunch and take the gondola in the afternoon if the sky is clear, or save it for the next morning. In summer walk the meadow with flowers; in winter play in the snow or ski. Plan a quiet evening by a fire. Our Gulmarg gondola guide explains the lift and how to deal with closures.
Day 4: Gulmarg to Pahalgam
After a slow breakfast, drive towards Pahalgam via Srinagar, passing saffron fields in autumn and apple orchards in summer. The journey takes several hours, so stop for tea and photographs and arrive in time for a gentle evening walk by the Lidder river. Check in to a riverside stay, and do nothing else.
Day 5: Valleys and river
Drive to Betaab Valley and on to Aru Valley in the morning for meadows and pines, then return to Pahalgam for lunch. Spend the afternoon beside the river, or on a short, easy pony ride on an open trail; confirm which are open, since some meadows have been closed at times. See our Pahalgam itinerary for the options, and have trout for dinner.
Day 6: Return to Srinagar
Drive back to Srinagar in the morning, stop for saffron or dry fruit shopping on the way and check in to a hotel or a second houseboat night. Use the afternoon for a heritage walk or a last garden, and finish with a long wazwan dinner. Keep this day light; it is the one you will remember as the end of the trip.
Day 7: A slow departure
Have a late breakfast, a last shikara or a shopping stop for saffron and a shawl, then transfer to the airport with time to spare. Leave at least three hours before your flight, since security checks can be slow, and keep a spare buffer in winter.
Variations
- In winter, add a second night in Gulmarg for snow and skip the outer Pahalgam valleys.
- In spring, build the tulip garden into day two; see our tulip festival guide.
- For more time, add a night in Sonmarg or an extra rest day.
- For a smaller budget, replace the houseboat with a lake-side hotel for one night.
What to book early
The houseboat, the Gulmarg hotel and the Pahalgam stay are the three that sell out. Tell the hotels it is a honeymoon in advance, and ask for rooms with views. Our honeymoon packages show the priced versions, and we can adapt any of them to your dates.
Plan B for each season
In summer, if rain closes a meadow, spend the day by the river or in a hotel with a spa, and ride the gondola the next clear morning. In autumn, cold mornings call for a late start and a long lunch; chinar colour is the reward. In winter, snow is the plan, so build in extra time for roads and enjoy Gulmarg as a snow trip, with Pahalgam as a quiet, white stay. In spring, showers are common and tulip dates vary, so keep the garden day flexible.
What the trip costs, in plain terms
The price depends on the season, the quality of the stays and how many private extras you add, such as a private shikara, a candlelit dinner and a driver for the whole week. A houseboat and a resort night cost more than a hotel; shoulder months cost less than June. We give a written quote with what is included and what you pay on the spot, such as gondola tickets, ponies and meals not in the plan, so nothing is a surprise. Our honeymoon packages show how a priced plan looks.
Ten small things that help
- Tell every hotel it is a honeymoon, in writing, before you arrive.
- Carry cash for tips, ponies and small purchases.
- Keep a warm layer in the car at all times.
- Charge cameras and phones every night; the cold drains batteries.
- Eat dinner early in the hills; kitchens close.
- Book the shikara for sunset, not midday.
- Keep the first and last days light.
- Leave one afternoon with no plan.
- Buy saffron and dry fruit from a trusted shop, and check the weight and the seal.
- Say yes to a second cup of kahwa.
Packing for two
Bring layers, a good rain jacket, comfortable shoes, a warm shawl for the evenings and a charger and power bank. A small gift for the boatman and the driver is appreciated but not required. Keep your documents together, and bring your marriage certificate if you are newly married and travelling on a special ticket.
Questions travellers ask
Is seven days right for a honeymoon in Kashmir?
Yes. It gives time for Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam with a slow pace and a spare day or two. A shorter plan of five days is possible with fewer stops.
Should we spend two nights on the houseboat?
One night is the classic. A second night makes sense if you want a very slow trip, and we can add it on day six.
What is the best month for this itinerary?
April to June and September and October. Winter is lovely for snow, with adjustments to the plan.
Can the plan be changed?
Yes. We adapt the days to your dates, the weather and your interests, and we keep a margin so one closed road or a rainy day does not spoil the trip.
What if the gondola or a road is closed?
We keep spare time in the plan, offer alternative activities and tell you early if a change is sensible.
