What is a hot air balloon flight over Srinagar like?

A balloon drifts with the wind rather than being steered, so the route is not fixed. The pilot picks a launch field, fills the envelope with hot air while the sun is still low, and lifts off in near silence apart from the burner. You see the lake, the gardens and the hillsides spread out below, with the mountains on the horizon if the air is clear. Our page puts the flight at about 45 to 60 minutes. Landing happens wherever the wind and a safe open field allow, and a ground crew usually meets you.

Is a balloon ride always available in Kashmir?

Do not assume so. A flight needs an operator, a pilot, calm air and the permissions that apply over a sensitive region, and it may not run as a standing daily service. Why does the flight start at sunrise?

Morning air is usually calmer, and a balloon is easiest to fly when the wind is light and steady. As the sun warms the ground the air starts to move and gust, so the pilot wants to be down early. The low sun also gives soft light over the water and the hills. The price is an early alarm: expect to leave your stay while it is still dark, and to feel the cold in the basket even in months that are warm by day.

What decides whether the flight goes?

• Wind: if it is too strong or too gusty, the pilot will not launch.
• Cloud and rain: low cloud hides the view, and rain makes take-off and landing unsafe.
• Visibility: haze or fog over the lake can ground a whole morning.
• Permission and airspace rules: these can change, and the operator decides on the day.
• The pilot's call: it is final.

Who is it for, and who should check first?

It suits couples, photographers and families with older children who enjoy a calm, high view. You do not need to be fit, but you must climb into a basket with sides around waist height, stand through the flight and bend for the landing. Check with your doctor first if you have back, neck or heart problems or are pregnant, and tell us about any mobility need before booking.

What should you wear and carry?

• Layers, because the pre-dawn air is cold and the flight is slow. Our packing list covers each season.
• A hat with a strap and closed shoes with grip. The burner gives off heat above your head, so a hat helps.
• A camera on a strap, a charged phone and a power bank in your bag. Keep loose items stowed.
• Gloves in autumn and winter, and your photo ID.

Which months suit an early flight?

Spring and autumn mornings are usually cool and clear, with blossom and tulips below in spring and colour in October and November; see our tulip festival guide. Summer mornings are soft on dry days but can bring cloud and showers, and winter brings cold, fog and snow, so we confirm availability before you plan on it. No month guarantees a flight, and we keep a spare morning in every plan.

2. We check whether a flight is running for those dates and who the operator is.
3. We send a quote with the flight, the transfer and any photographs as separate lines, and the weather terms in writing.

What can you do if the balloon is not available?

Paragliding gives an aerial view over Sonmarg, Gulmarg or Pahalgam. The Gulmarg gondola lifts you above the meadows.
