Can you fly a drone in Kashmir?

Possibly, with permission. India regulates drones nationally, through its drone rules and the Digital Sky platform, and what applies depends on the drone's weight class, where you fly and whether the shoot is commercial. Kashmir has many restricted areas, including around airports, military and security sites and border areas, and the position changes. We cannot promise permission, and we do not tell you a place is allowed without checking. Flying without permission can bring penalties and the loss of the drone.

Our page says we give guidance on no-fly zones and permit requirements, so ask us before you plan a shot, not after you land.

Place people ask aboutWhy it needs care
Dal Lake and the old cityBusy, dense areas close to sensitive sites; check the zone and the permission first
The Mughal GardensPublic heritage gardens with many visitors, where flying may be restricted
Gulmarg meadowsOpen terrain, but strong afternoon winds and security areas nearby
Pahalgam valleysOpen valleys and rivers, crowded in the season
Sonmarg and the passesHigh altitude, strong wind and the Srinagar to Leh highway, with a security presence
Border valleys such as Gurez, Keran and TurtukDo not fly near border areas, checkposts or military sites; do not plan a shot there

Our permits and ID guide explains how checkposts work and why a drone should stay in its case near them.

What should you check when you collect the drone?

  • Count and charge every battery, and check the propellers, the gimbal and the camera.
  • Make sure the firmware and the app are up to date, and download the maps you need before you leave signal.
  • Check the return-to-home setting and the battery warnings, and know what the drone's own flight restrictions do near airports.
  • Format the memory card, and test one short flight in an open, permitted space with our basic training.
  • Write down any damage at hand-over, and confirm what the deposit covers and when it comes back.

What do the seasons mean for aerial shots?

SeasonWhat it gives youFlying notes
SpringBlossom and tulip colourWind and showers can interrupt a plan
SummerGreen meadows and long daysAfternoon haze and thunderstorms; fly in the morning
AutumnGolden chinar leaves and clear airShort days, so plan the light
WinterSnow-covered landscapesCold drains batteries faster, so keep spares warm, and fog and snow reduce visibility

Our best time to visit Kashmir guide covers each season, and the Dal Lake guide and Gulmarg guide describe the views people ask about.

What are the manners of flying well?

  • Keep the drone in sight, and land well before the battery runs low.
  • Keep away from people, vehicles, crowds and religious sites, and never fly over them.
  • Ask before you film people or homes, and respect a refusal.
  • Do not disturb wildlife or livestock.
  • Land at once if the weather changes or anyone asks you to stop.

How do you rent a drone?

  1. Message us through our contact page or on WhatsApp with your dates, the locations you have in mind, whether the shoot is personal or commercial, and your experience.
  2. We suggest a model, tell you what to check about the zone and the permission, and quote the rent and the deposit in writing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does drone rental in Kashmir cost?

The rate depends on the model, the number of days and the season, and a refundable deposit is held on top, so we do not print one price. Send your dates and the model you have in mind on WhatsApp and we confirm the rent and the deposit in writing before you pay.

Do I need permission to fly a drone in Kashmir?

You should expect to. Drones are regulated nationally, and Kashmir has many restricted areas, including airports, military and border sites. Our page says we give guidance on no-fly zones and permit requirements. We cannot promise approval, and you should not fly until you have what the rules require.

How much is the security deposit?

It is refundable and depends on the drone model, and we confirm the amount before you pay. Our page says a deposit and valid ID are required. Minor damage can be covered from the deposit, while serious damage or loss can cost more, so ask for the terms and write down the drone's condition at hand-over.

Do you provide training for first-time pilots?

Our page says we give basic training on operation and safety for first-time users. Use it: practise in an open, permitted space, learn the return-to-home setting and the battery warnings, and never fly over people. Take a short practice flight before you rely on the drone for an important shot.

Can I rent a drone with an operator?

Our page says rentals with an experienced operator are available for professional filming. A commercial shoot also needs the right permissions, so tell us the purpose, the locations and the dates and we explain what to arrange first. Ask for the plan in writing.

Which places do people film with a drone in Kashmir?

People ask about Dal Lake, the Mughal Gardens, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonmarg and snowy winter landscapes. Whether you may fly at any of them depends on the zone, the authorities and the day, and none is assured. Tell us the shot you want and we suggest where to ask first.
