How does a tandem paragliding flight work?

You wear a harness joined to the pilot's, and the pilot controls the wing. At take-off you walk or jog a few steps downhill while the wing fills with air, and then your feet leave the ground. In the air you sit back in the harness, so it does not feel like falling, and you can look around. The pilot picks the route and the landing, which is usually a few steps on open ground. Flight time depends on wind and rising air, and our page puts it at about 15 to 30 minutes.

Where can you fly, and how do the three places differ?

Which take-off is in use on a given day depends on wind direction, the operator and local arrangements. We confirm the place when we confirm the slot, rather than promise one in advance.

Who can fly, and who should check first?

Tandem paragliding suits most healthy adults and older teenagers. Weight and age limits come from the wing and the pilot, so give us each flyer's age and weight at enquiry, and we confirm the limit before you pay. Skip it, or ask your doctor first, if you have a back or neck problem, a heart or blood-pressure condition or epilepsy, if you are pregnant or if you have had recent surgery. Fear of heights matters less than people expect because you sit in a harness, but only you know your limit, and you can say no on the hill.

What decides whether you fly?

• Wind: too strong, too gusty or from the wrong direction means no flight.
• Cloud and rain: low cloud hides the slope, and a wet wing is a poor wing.
• Ground: snow or mud at the take-off point can close it.
• The hour: the pilot picks the steadiest part of the day, so a delay of a few hours is common. Keep your day open.
• Season: our page names April to October as the months when conditions suit flying. Outside them we do not promise a flight.

How do you fit a flight into a Kashmir plan?

Put it on a day you are already at the hill station, in the morning if you can, and keep the afternoon as a spare slot. Do not schedule it on your last day, and do not stack it after a long climb or a day that tires you. If Gulmarg is your base, plan the gondola on another day, because cloud can close both. If you would rather keep your feet on the ground, try a pony ride, the gondola or a hot air balloon flight, subject to availability.

What should you wear, and what should you ask before paying?

• Closed shoes with grip, long trousers, a warm layer and sunglasses, with long hair tied back.
• Who the pilot is and what certification they hold, and what equipment and helmet they use.
• The weather policy, and whether the price includes photos, the transfer and a pickup at the landing area.
• Whether you must sign a waiver, and whether your travel insurance covers adventure sport. Check the wording.

How honest are we about risk?

Paragliding is an air sport, and tandem flights carry real risk however experienced the pilot is. What helps is a pilot who will cancel, a briefing you follow and equipment in good order.
