What the Thar is for

The Thar is the car you hire for the fun of the drive and the places where tarmac ends. Four-wheel drive, a firm suspension and real ground clearance make it comfortable on the river-bed tracks, gravel passes and steep climbs that suit Ladakh, Gurez and the meadow trails above Gulmarg. On a warm day, take the soft top off and drive with the mountains open around you. It is not the plush option: the ride is firm, the cabin is simpler and luggage space is modest.

Who should rent it

Confident drivers who want an adventure and are comfortable with a firm, high vehicle. It carries a small party, usually two to four, with soft bags. For a family with a lot of luggage, a Scorpio or an Innova is more practical, and for a budget small car on valley roads, a Swift.

Ladakh, Gurez and remote trails

These are the Thar's roads, and also the roads where preparation matters. Permits and local rules apply in Ladakh and in border valleys such as Gurez, and they change; we confirm what applies to your dates. The open-top experience, with care

An open top is a pleasure in warm sun and a hazard in cold, rain or dust. Carry a jacket and sun protection, keep valuables out of sight and close the top when you leave the car. At altitude the air is thin and cold even on a bright day.

Terms and safety

• A valid driving licence, identity proof and a security deposit; fuel is paid by the customer.
• Daily, weekly or monthly rental, confirmed in writing.
• We check the car with you at handover and explain its controls, including the four-wheel-drive modes.
• Do not drive after dark on mountain roads, and turn back if a pass is closed or the weather changes.
