Which package suits a family, and what does it cost?

Our family packages page lists five itineraries. The prices below are per person on twin sharing, ex-Srinagar, copied from each package's own table, with the extra-bed price at the end. Child rates and age limits are not printed on the package pages, so tell us each child's age and we quote in writing.

Each price covers deluxe rooms as per the hotel list, daily breakfast and dinner, a one-hour shikara ride on Dal Lake, airport pickup and drop, and a private vehicle. Lunch, gondola tickets, pony rides, guide charges and entry fees are extra.

How do we pace the days with children?

Kashmir's roads wind, and the hill stations are a few hours from Srinagar, so the shape of the day matters more than the sight list. We aim for one main outing, a lunch stop where children can run and a quiet hour back at the stay. Our itineraries put Gulmarg at about 1.5 hours, Pahalgam at about 2 hours and Sonmarg at about 3 hours from Srinagar, and traffic or weather adds to that. If a child gets carsick on bends, tell us, and we plan the longer drive early with water, snacks and stops.

Which rooms and stays work for a family?

Our page says family or adjoining rooms, and the package tables price an extra bed. Ask for the layout in writing: how many beds, whether a child's bed is a cot or a mattress, how many steps lead to the room and when hot water runs. A houseboat is a highlight for children, but the decks, the gangway and the lake edge need an adult's hand; see our houseboat page and the houseboat or hotel guide. Our shikara page says life jackets are available on request for children and non-swimmers, so ask for them.

What do children enjoy, and what should parents check?

What about health, altitude and food?

Srinagar is about 1,600 m above sea level. Pahalgam is about 2,200 m, Gulmarg about 2,650 m and Sonmarg about 2,700 m. Most families manage, but a child may feel tired or headachy after a long drive, so go slowly and drink water. Carry the children's usual medicines and a basic first-aid kit; the hill stations have basic clinics and the main hospitals are in Srinagar. Breakfast and dinner are in the package price, and lunch is yours to plan. Kashmiri food can be rich, so ask for plain rice, bread, eggs or milk for fussy eaters. When should a family go?

April to June and September to October bring mild days. July and August are greener and cooler than the plains. School holidays are the busiest weeks, so book rooms and the vehicle early. What should you tell us and pack?

• Each child's age, any health need and whether a child needs a separate bed. Our page says child car seats can be arranged on request when you book.
• Grandparents' mobility, so we choose the vehicle and the pace; see our senior citizen packages.
