The journal
Skiing in Gulmarg, trekking through Sonmarg, camping under Ladakh's star-filled skies. Notes for travellers who want Kashmir on the move.
Adventure here means mountains: skiing and snow play in Gulmarg, trekking among the high lakes, rafting in the summer rivers, paragliding on the slopes and long drives over high passes into Ladakh. Most of it depends on the season, the weather and your fitness, and the best trips are planned with a margin. Read our Gulmarg skiing guide for winter and our Great Lakes trek page for summer treks.
Match the activity to the month. January and February are for snow and skiing, April and May for quiet walks and early rafting, June to September for treks and high roads, and October for clear, cold days on the meadows. If you have little experience, start with a guided day, such as a snow day in Gulmarg or a short pony and walking trip, before committing to a multi-day trek. Our adventure tour packages show ready-made plans, and our snowfall guide explains winter conditions.
Adventure trips need honest preparation: check the weather and road status, use registered guides and operators, wear proper kit and keep a spare day. Altitude is the main risk on the high roads and treks, so ascend gradually and drink water. Carry medicines, a first-aid kit and a charged phone, and tell your hotel your plan. We choose operators with care and tell you plainly if a plan is too much for your group.
Winter for skiing and snow, summer for treks, rafting and high roads, and spring and autumn for quieter outdoor days. Conditions change, so we confirm status before you travel.
Moderate fitness is enough for most guided activities, and more is needed for multi-day treks. Tell us your experience and health, and we suggest the right level.
With registered operators, proper kit and respect for weather and closures, yes. We do not recommend going off marked routes without a guide.
Yes. Tell us your dates, your level and what you want to do and we suggest a plan with a spare day for weather.
